Alberni Valley & the West Coast
Port Alberni is a community in the beautiful Alberni Valley, located at the end of Alberni Inlet. It
is close to the east and west coasts of Vancouver Island. To the west you will
find Long Beach, Ucluelet, and Tofino. Thirty minutes east are
Qualicum and Parksville. Nanaimo one hour away and Victoria, British Columbia’s capital
city, is a two and one half hour drive south. Port Alberni real estate is
the most affordable on Vancouver Island.
Recreational
salmon fishing in Port Alberni is awesome! The Stamp River system has over one
million salmon returns annually. Known as the
"Salmon Capital of the World", Port
Alberni hosts the annual 'Salmon Festival.' Besides ocean fishing
Alberni has many
fresh water lakes in the area. For the tourist interested in fish, a visit to
the
Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery on the Stamp River or the fish ladders in the Stamp Falls
Provincial Campsite is captivating.
Ten minutes from Port Alberni, just
off the Pacific Rim Highway is spectacular Sproat Lake. You may wish to swim,
sun bath or enjoy boating activities. From Sproat Lake Provincial Park you can
see the world famous Martin Mars water bombers resting on the lake. They are
used to fight forest fires.
Port
Alberni equipped and maintained sports fields and indoor facilities. The
Alberni Valley Multiplex, with twin 200’ x 85’ ice sheets, is home to
the
Alberni Valley Bulldogs, plus various other ice programs.
Port Alberni’s new 52 bed hospital
opened in 2001. This beautiful designed building includes emergency,
diagnostic, ambulatory care and inpatient departments. Single and double rooms
have views of the surrounding gardens and wooded areas. The four maternity rooms
are designed for ultimate comfort and personal care to accommodate the mother
and her baby throughout the entire delivery process and following hospital stay.
Ucluelet (you-clue-let)
is a Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation word
meaning 'safe harbour.' Ucluelet's slogan is 'Life On the Edge' suiting
their geographical south-east
location of
Barkley
Sound. Tourist from around the world come to Ucluelet to
Kayak the Broken Group Islands, hike the
Wild Pacific Trail,
fish for salmon, cod or halibut, beach combing, whale watching and storm
watching in the winter months. Ucluelet is a 2 hour car ride from Port Alberni
or enjoy a 4½ hour ride on the
Frances Barkley.
Tofino is a fishing village at the tip of
Esowista Peninsula entrance of the
Clayoquot Sound on the West Coast of
Vancouver Island. Major
Islands of the Clayoquot Sound
are Mears Island, Vargas Island and Flores Island. Major Inlets are Sydney
Inlet, Shelter Inlet, Herbert Inlet, Bedwell Inlet, Lemmens Inlet and Tofino
Inlet. Tourists come from all over the world to surf on
Long Beach,
whale watch, fish, camp, hike, kayak, storm watch at
The Wickaninnish Inn
or just enjoy nature.
Parksville &
Qualicum Beach
Parksville
is located on the sheltered east coast of Vancouver Island with over 7.5 km of
sandy ocean front. Home to
Rathtrevor Beach and Parksville Beach the towns main attractions.
Parksville Beach
Festival hosts the annual sandcastle competition that has been enjoyed since
1982.
Qualicum Beach is a
charming coastal community of 8,502 people, located on the Strait of Georgia on
the east coast of Vancouver Island. It offers sandy beaches, six provincial
parks, a golf course, airport, gift & speciality shops, art galleries, a museum,
and live theatre company. The
Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Club is
one of Canada's most scenic with it's ocean and mountain views. It is open year
round due to their mild climate and excellent drainage.
Campbell
River & Quadra Island
Campbell River is a scenic oceanfront city on the eastern shore of Vancouver
Island and the 4th largest city on the Island. It is situated on the Discovery
Passage and known as the "Salmon Capital of the World". Each year salmon pass
through the Discovery Passage on their way to Campbell River and other spawning
grounds. The city is surrounded by
Strathcona Provincial Park to the west and
the Coastal mountain range to the east.
Quadra Island is home to a lively community of 2,700 people.
Quathiaski Cove or Q-Cove as it is referred to by the locals is the hub and
point of arrival for the regular ferry service between the city of Campbell River.
Heriot
Bay serves as a departure point for the ferry to
Cortes Island and other boat
services to the outer Discovery Islands. Fishing and lodging are the primary
activities and industries.
